One thing I've wished I could do is set direction a bit more finely for subsidiaries. Basically delegating parts of the market, geographically or by market segment to them. I'd like to say, "you be Ford Europe, I'll be Ford North America", or "Jeep, you go make all sorts of SUVs and pickups while as Chrysler I'll handle the sedans."
This would help especially in the late game where there's too many segments to compete in them all without it taking a long time redesigning models. I find I often quite sometime in the 1945 - 1965 range because the model refresh becomes overwhelming, and being able to have my child marques take over segments (but not necessarily compete with the parent marque in other segments as they do now) would be nice. A more stringent "focus" option when you spin them off in a way.
It might only make sense for wholly-owned-subsidiaries for gameplay/realism reasons.
